There is not really a better way to study for English than doing past papers and practice your writing…
Again, here are the tips:
Paper 2
- explain the quotes
- short quotation
- do not say “this draws the reader in/makes the reader want to read on”
- explain how or why this effect was achieved
- do not have to mention e.g. “terrified” for every analysis
- colors e.g. red for danger, white for calmness
- strong adjectives sometimes adverbs and lists, somehow made things more exciting
- alliteration of “began to bound” seems to emphasize his terror with a heavy beat and explosive sound.
- echoes, invites, suggests, emphasizes, highlights, implies, portrays, draws the conclusion, provokes thoughts etc.
- use connectives for summary (consequently, also, furthermore), combine words
- 15 points are usually implied, read closely in between lines
- check for content for question 1 afterwards if time allows
- summary: GROUP ideas
Paper 3
- build up to climax, use pathetic fallacy
- use five senses and descriptive languages
- give details
- open with dialogue/setting the scene/starting with climax
- a twist/summary/positive/negative conclusion/open ending
- use different sentence structures
- recurring motif
- use paralleled adjectives to convey strong feelings
